CLUB HISTORY
Meapa Gymnastics Club was established in 1976 by Eileen and George Disley and Lynn Minshull.
Despite facing initial challenges in finding gymnasts and equipment, the club’s dedication led to remarkable achievements. By 1978, Meapa became the leading gymnastics club for girls in Kent, with several members gaining positions in the National Squad and participating in national and international competitions.
Eileen and George played pivotal roles as coaches and judges, contributing to national squad training and accompanying gymnasts to international events. In 1983, the club attained registered charity status and won The British Women’s Knock-Out Team Championships. The training venues evolved from Meopham School to Thong Lane Sports Centre, Milton Barracks, and finally settling in the school gymnasium at Southfields.
As the club grew, the need for better facilities became apparent. Through grants and fundraising efforts, Meapa secured the construction of a purpose-designed facility. Volunteer coaches played a significant role in the club’s success, providing expertise and continuity in training over the years. The club’s reputation led to it being selected as a training facility for the 2012 Olympic Games.
In 2016, Meapa celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in subsequent years, planning permission was granted for venue expansion. In 2020, the club hosted its first Gymnastics Festival, showcasing skills from participants of all ages and levels. Notably, Meapa won the Disley Cup at the South East Regional Championships, a trophy dedicated to Eileen and George Disley.
After two decades of fundraising, Meapa Gymnastics Club announced the opening of a new purpose-built gymnasium in Rochester, Kent, equipped to Olympic standards. This development marks a significant milestone for the club’s continued growth and commitment to gymnastics.
