8 gymnasts from The Meapa Gymnastics Club recently travelled to Györ in Hungary to compete at the 1st Györ Open International Competition. The girls trained and competed in the National Sports Centre in Györ that hosted the 2017 European Youth Olympics and will be hosting the 1st Junior World Gymnastics Championships later this month.
The competition was split into 4 age categories and the girls competed against clubs from Romania, Austria, Iceland, Dubai, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
The competition started with the 2007/2008 category where Sienna had a solid competition and placed 1st overall. Sienna also went on to collect a silver medal on bars and a gold medal on floor.
The 2005/2006 – FIG category followed, with Freya finishing 6th overall, closely followed by Jessica 8th and Gemma 9th. Holly & Erin had both sustained injuries before we travelled and were unable to compete on all apparatus. Freya & Jessica also won a joint bronze medal on floor with Erin taking the Silver medal. This was the largest category of the whole competition and all the girls competed very well.
The final round of the day was the 2003/2004 – FIG category where Shannon placed 1st and Poppy 2nd overall. Shannon also took the titles on bars, beam and floor as well as collecting a silver medal on vault. Poppy also collected a silver medal on bars, beam and floor, with a bronze medal on vault. Shannon also received a special award for achieving the highest club score.
Of the 8 gymnasts who competed at the Györ Open International a total of 17 medals were won overall and on individual apparatus.
This was a massively successful trip for all these girls, aged between 11-15 years old, who had not only trained hard to achieve new skills but had also won medals and gained a fabulous experience with their gymnastics. We are extremely proud of how they tackled this trip and the fantastic results they all achieved in this competition.
